Listen to Duke
Music is
everything. Nature is music. The sea is
music; the wind is music. The rain drumming on the roof and the storm
raging in the sky are music. Music is the oldest entity. The scope of
music is immense and infinite. It is the ‘esperanto’ of the world. |

Music was the constant in Duke Ellington’s life. He wrote every day, no matter where he was in the world, even If he had to write on napkins, shirt sleeves, or menus. To Duke, it was the music that mattered and what the music could bring to the world.
In the 1920s Duke began using the term “beyond category” to describe excellence. Duke didn’t believe in classification. He believed that classification results in division, which he saw as the root cause of human adversity. To be beyond category meant transcending the barriers and boundaries that segregate people into groups.
Duke Ellington saw the power his music had on others. He understood that music had the power to unify, empower, enlighten and heal.
The Duke Ellington Center for the Arts is committed to carrying Duke’s legacy into the 21st Century and beyond through performance programs, education and scholarships. Come back often and check out what we’re doing. We look forward to your support, with thanks, and
As Duke would say, we
